US costs of health care, child care and college soar fastest

Inflation, as measured by the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), has resulted in an 180% increase in prices since 2000. Median weekly earnings have risen faster than the CPI, as have official housing costs. But the costs of health care, child care and college have soared much faster over this 25-year period, according to official government estimates.
