Minnesota has about 6 million acres of peat soils, called histosols, mostly concentrated in the north. Histosols are peaty, waterlogged soils with a top layer of highly organic material that’s at least 16” thick, where the organic matter is at least 30% organic material, mostly decaying plants, by weight.
