U.S. new car, pickup truck and SUV sales dipped nearly 1 percent to about 1.57 million units last month compared to August 2014, well below forecasts of as much as a 4 percent drop. Automakers with a strong selection of SUVs, crossovers (small SUV-like cars built on sedan platforms) and pickup trucks fared better than manufacturers who depend heavily on sedan sales, like Honda and Toyota.
