Across the U.S., 16 states and the District of Columbia use an independent commission to pre-select judicial candidates. Another five states require incumbent judges to face nonpartisan elections to remain in office. Seventeen states do both. And the remaining 12 states use other methods, including gubernatorial nominations with state senate approvals, partisan elections or other systems.
