For years, Philadelphia has posted a net loss among U.S. residents who relocated into or out of the city. That trend accelerated in 2021, when Philadelphia posted a net domestic migration loss of more than 28,000 people, more than twice the level of the previous year.
By contrast, Phoenix's home county saw an increase in net domestic migration of nearly 47,000 residents, and Riverside County in California posted an increase of 31,000.
