The number of open jobs in the U.S. fell to 6.6 million in December 2025, a five-year low, which is slowing wage growth.

Monthly job openings show slight growth from about 5.6 million jobs in 2017 to 7 million in 2020, before dropping to a low of 4.6 million from pandemic effects. There was a post-pandemic hiring surge, as job openings increased dramatically from December 2020 to a peak of 12.1 million jobs in March 2022. Since then, job openings have been on a downward trend, dropping to 6.5 million in December 2025.
