Medi-Cal Spending Climbs

The cost to run California’s Medicaid program has more than doubled since the 2013-14 fiscal year, and continues to grow even as enrollment declines. The federal government pays the vast majority of Medi-Cal’s costs.

Note: These amounts do not include spending by some departments and programs before they became part of the state Department of Health Care Services, which administers Medi-Cal. And the portion of Medi-Cal costs designated as “federal funds” includes a small amount of other funds.
