Note: Data estimates on private donations for the 2020 fiscal year are based on survey responses from 873 U.S. institutions to the Voluntary Support of Education survey, which was acquired by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education from the Council for Aid to Education in 2018. The survey tracked gifts that were received, not just promised, during the 2020 fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 2020, for most institutions. The donor group “Other organizations” include religious organizations, fund-raising consortia like the United Way, and donor-advised funds. More than 45 percent of reported foundation support came from family foundations, some of which were established by alumni. “Capital purposes” include endowment, property, buildings, equipment, and loan funds. The change from the 2019 fiscal year was calculated after figures for 2019 were adjusted to account for inflation.
