Alberta: “Supplementary benefits” may be provided – up to $200 per year – to assist with school fees or childcare expenses.

Manitoba: The province said its “alternate care” arrangements are rough equivalents to Ontario’s “kinship service” families. There is “no formal rate structure” for these arrangements, and child and family services agencies “assess family needs and determine funding/services on a case-by-case basis.”

Nova Scotia: Initial set-up funding also available of $500 for the first child and $250 for each additional child, up to a maximum of $1,000. Additional funding may be provided “on a case-by-case basis.”

Ontario: Northern communities refers to areas north of the 50th parallel and without year-round road access.

Children’s aid societies can also provide “kinship service” families with up to $1,000 annually to help with the costs of clothing, school materials, counselling, dental and optical care, and other needs. Additionally, start-up funding of up to $1,000 per family is available.

Quebec: The province said it does not have an equivalent to Ontario’s “kinship services” placements. When authorities determine that a child needs protection and must be removed from a home, they are taken into care and become the legal responsibility of a regional child protection centre. Children may then be placed with relatives in what’s known as a “kinship foster family” arrangement, and these families receive the same financial support as regular foster families – roughly $3,200 per month per child.
