SNAP spending soared during the COVID-19 pandemic

Federal spending on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which helps low-income Americans buy groceries, stood at about $100 billion in 2024. That was a significant decline from the $128 billion the U.S. government spent on SNAP at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
