Out-migration is a major population drain in urban areas

The overall population of large urban U.S. counties is growing modestly, due to immigration from abroad and “natural change" that reflects declining deaths among the general population. At the same time, some 800,000 people are moving out of these areas yearly, including many families with young children and people in their mid-20s to mid-40s.
