Labor Force Participation by Age Group

The overall labor force participation rate is projected to continue its downward trend through 2030. The participation rates of older age groups have been trending upward for the past two decades and are projected to continue to do so as the large Baby Boom generation continues to age. The rates of younger age groups have been steadily declining over the past couple of decades and are projected to continue to do so through 2030 due to a delayed entrance into the workforce. The participation rate of the prime-age population (ages 25 to 54) has been slowly trending down but is expected to remain flat through 2030.
