We need carbon removal to keep global heating below 2.5°C

The latest IPCC report suggests we must remove colossal amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere in order to keep global heating below 2.5°C - reaching net zero is only the beginning.

Each line on the chart represents median values from the IPCC models that reach the listed temperature targets. The vertical axis shows global net-emissions - after net-zero, they become negative, presuming industrial-scale carbon dioxide removal.

Data drawn from Table SPM.1 in the IPCC's Working Group 3 AR6 report. NDCs stands for nationally determined contributions; each country's pledges to the UN regarding the actions they will take to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
