This visual shows that between fall 2019 and fall 2021, the percent of freshmen at Cal State San Marcos who failed a course in their first semester grew from 40% for Black students to 56%. For underrepresented minority students, a group the CSU uses to mean Black, Latino and Native American students, the share of freshmen failing a course in the first term rose from 25% to 46%. For all other students, which includes white, Asian, international and other select groups, the failure rate rose from 17% to 32%.
