Failing to meet mental health care needs

Across the U.S., only 28% of individuals’ mental health care needs are met. In the following states, including Illinois, that percentage is even lower.

The Kaiser Family Foundation analyzed federal data on designated mental health professional shortage areas from the Bureau of Health Workforce, Health Resources and Services Administration. It calculated the percent of need met by dividing the number of psychiatrists available to serve the population by the number of psychiatrists that would be necessary to eliminate the shortage. Numbers are as of Sept. 30, 2022.
