Maternal Mortality Rates in the United States 2018-2020

The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income country at 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births. This rate is expected to rise in the coming years. Between the years of 2018 and 2022, the southeast boasted some of the country's highest rates of maternal mortality, with Georgia ranking 43rd for its staggering prevalence of pregnancy-related deaths.

The maternal mortality rate refers to the number of maternal deaths per every 100,000 live births. The values included in this map make up the number of deaths due to complications from pregnancy or childbirth. Maternal mortality rates also measure deaths from any cause related to or exacerbated by pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of a terminated pregnancy.
