2020 New Hampshire Primary: Youth Turnout and Vote Share Exceeds Previous Comparable Years

Data is for participation in competitive nominating contests; includes young people ages 18-29

2000, 2008, 2016: Combined participation in the Democratic and Republican primaries.

1996, 2012: Includes only the Republican primary. In these years, there was no Democratic primary because there was an incumbent Democratic president.

2004, 2020: Includes only the Democratic primary. Republican primaries were not competitive because there was/is an incumbent Republican president.
Source: The share of primary participants is obtained from the 2020, 2016, 2012, 2008, and 2004 NH exit polls conducted by Edison Research, and the 2000 and 1996 NH exit polls conducted by Voter News Services. The numbers of votes cast are obtained from media outlets with at least 90% reporting.
