The map highlights the top 100 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) based on patent applications submitted to the world's five largest patent offices (IP5). The rankings are determined using fractional apportionment, which allocates patents to HEIs according to their share of applications.

Note: Based on IP5 patent data for 866 universities from 31 European countries, only direct academic patents (i.e. patent applications where the university is one of the applicants).
