ARE GRANT REDUCTIONS A POLITICAL PENALTY?

California won the largest average annual share of federal transportation infrastructure TIGER grants among all U.S. states during the Obama administration. In two years of the Trump administration, the state's annual average share is less than half of what it was. California is one of six states carried by Hillary Clinton in 2016 in which the annual average share of TIGER or BUILD grants has been sliced by at least half.

Parentheses next to each state indicate which candidate won there in the 2016 presidential election. Bold denotes states where the annual average share of TIGER or BUILD grant awards under President Trump are less than half what they were before.
