DOD and HHS awarded the most federal funds to PGH

The Department of Defense and the Department of Health and Human Services have awarded the most SBIR and STTR funding to Pittsburgh-based companies since the programs started awarding funds in 1983. NASA, NSF and DOE rounded out the top five agencies that have provided the largest total funding.

The Department of Defense has awarded $165 million to Pittsburgh-based companies through the SBIR and STTR programs, followed by the Department of Health and Human Services at $127.8 million, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at $47.5 million, the National Science Foundation at $38.6 million and the Department of Energy $37.7 million.
