AI chatbots cite 'earned media' much more often than other information sources

Third-party publications like news sites, aggregators and independent blogs were far and away the preferred citations in answers by Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and ChatGPT generated between July and December 2025, according to a Muck Rack study.
