The number of people referred for competency restoration in Indiana has increased more than fivefold since 2013, rising from 123 to 615 in 2024. These programs help individuals found incompetent to stand trial — those unable to understand legal proceedings or assist in their defense due to mental illness — regain competency through treatment and legal education.
