The roughly 17,000 hectare large EU protected area that surrounds Haanja Natural Park in the south of the country features 55 properties owned by Graanul Invest and its subsidiaries. E&T filtered tree cover loss in these areas and found that loss rates increased faster than the tree cover loss rate observed for the entire 2000 Natura zone (in green). Forest loss increased 427 per cent for Graanul’s property between 2010 to 2015 and 2016 to 2019 compared with 304 per cent for the entire Natura area. The tree cover analysis is based on data released by Global Forest Watch which admits to a marginal error rate of 20 per cent or more.
