Illinois ranks No. 1 for high property taxes in 2023

New data shows Illinois in 2023 had the highest property taxes in the U.S., surpassing New Jersey. With a median home value of $250,500 and an effective property tax rate of 1.83%, the typical Illinois homeowner paid around $4,584 that year.
