Working-age benefits swamp defence and education spending
The total budget for 2024/5 is £1,275bn - a quarter of which (23.8%) is allocated for welfare spending. This is higher than both the defence budget (4.4%) and education budget (9.1%). Some £90.4bn is allocated towards health and disability benefits alone, making up 7.1% of the budget.
