The Age Groups Facing the Highest Road Death Toll
Drivers and passengers aged 25 to 44 recorded the highest traffic death toll of any age group in 2024 at 13,173, more than 10 times the total for drivers under 16, who saw 1,235 deaths. The 45 to 64 age group followed at 10,209 deaths, with the 65 and older population at 8,019 and the 16 to 24 group at 6,422. The concentration among working age adults, rather than the newest or oldest drivers, suggests exposure (time spent on the road commuting and running errands) may be driving the gap as much as risk taking behavior.
