Change in Federal Employment in the Philadelphia Area

Federal employment in the Philadelphia area fell by more than 3,900 from January 2025 through February 2026 — a 16.7% decline. The Department of the Treasury, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Social Security Administration, saw the largest job cuts.

Data reflect employment as of the final pay period of each month. The Philadelphia area includes Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania; Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties in New Jersey; New Castle County in Delaware; and Cecil County in Maryland. Data for the United States Postal Service and employees working in most law enforcement or national security roles are not included.
