Economic Insecurity among single older Black Americans

The Elder Index gauges the income level single Americans ages 65 and older need to live in their current counties. Nationally, 47% of single white seniors and 64% of single Black seniors live below that line. The map shows state percentages of single Black seniors below the line.

Data for 2019. The index reflects a baseline reading of the financial stress facing older adults. It does not consider family financial support or government and charitable support beyond Social Security payments.
