Anxiety/depression diagnoses are not going up
NHS data up to the year 2023/4 suggest that while diagnoses of anxiety and depression-related disorders are high, they are not necessarily increasing.
The data on disorders relating to depression (which include major depression, bipolar disorder and more) show that around 33,000 people received a primary diagnosis last year. Across these mental health disorders, diagnosis peaked around Covid (2019/20 year). Note: this data is not high-quality and likely contains faults.
The NHS data on diagnoses is often inconsistent and poor quality. It is likely that this data is incomplete, and that some mental health conditions are double reported.
