What type of school does a 7th grader attend?

Most California school districts operate separate elementary, middle, and high schools. Most 7th grade students are in a dedicated middle school. In contrast, 7th graders in charter and private schools are more likely to be in K-8 or K-12 schools.

For district and charter schools, percentages are based on the number of 7th graders who took the Math SBAC test in 2023-24. For private schools, the percentages are based on 7th grade enrollment. Middle schools end in grade 8 and start as early as grade 4. Middle+high schools end in grade 12 and start as early as grade 4. A grade configuration of "Other" is one that was hard for the author to classify.
