A map of the United States that shows which states have the most generous insurance mandates for people with autism. States with higher scores have more generous mandates. The map was created using data from a study called "Autism Insurance Mandates in the US: Comparison of Mandated Commercial Insurance Benefits Across States," by Choi et al.
Kristen Choi and her colleagues gave each state a score (1 to 4) based on the age and dollar limits it places on coverage for autism services. A score of 1 indicates coverage of children only and a low dollar limit on benefits. A score of 2 or 3 indicates dollar limits above the median and coverage of some adults (2) or all individuals (3). States earning 4 points have no age or dollar limits. States lost a half-point if the dollar limit was not adjusted for inflation.
