'Luxury' items proposed for added Nebraska sales taxes

State Sen. Tom Brandt of Plymouth, through Legislative Bills 169 and 170, seeks to add a 5.5% state sales tax (plus local sales taxes) to the following tax-exempt items. He has said the new revenue could be used for property tax relief to invest in companion legislation from State Sen. Jana Hughes of Seward, LB 303, to have the state direct more state dollars toward schools for property tax relief.

Brandt said the estimated revenue includes taxing general purchases made by accredited zoos and aquariums, not just single-day memberships, so the projected tax revenue should be lower.
