New Jersey deaths outpace official coronavirus count

Since the disease's outbreak, overall deaths in New Jersey have skyrocketed compared to previous years. New Jersey attributed 10,138 deaths to COVID-19 as of May 15, but mortality figures from the past 11 weeks suggest that number could be understated by more than 20%.

Excess deaths compare March 1 through May 14 to the average deaths in those 11 weeks in 2015 through 2019.
