Public health insurance among Valley seniors

About 95% of senior citizens in the San Joaquin Valley have health insurance coverage through the federal Medicare program, either alone or with some other insurance. Between 18% and 34% are covered under Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) for low-income persons.

A total of more almost 504,000 senior citizens (age 65 and older) are covered by Medicare in the eight-county region. Medicaid, the federal program for low-income residents, includes almost 134,000 senior citizens in the Valley. Approximately 5,500 have no form of health insurance coverage.
