Underground Coal Mine Fires in Colorado

Some of the abandoned coal mines around Colorado have a burning secret: They're harboring underground fires that can rage for years, decades or even centuries. The Colorado Department of Natural Resources monitors and mitigates fire activity but extinguishing the blazes can require excavation that is nearly impossible on steep slopes.
