Bar charts. Percentages of Republicans, independents and Democrats by age group, political ideology and education level with a great deal or fair amount of trust and confidence in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately and fairly. The data are based on aggregated data from polls in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Older Democrats (79% trust among those 55 and older) and independents (40% trust) show greater levels of trust than younger Democrats (51%) and independents (26%). By ideology, Democrats and Republicans show no appreciable differences, while the most liberal independents are most trusting (47%), and the most conservative are the least trusting (18%). Trust among all groups of Democrats, including by college education status, is at 70% or higher for all but the youngest age group. By contrast, all Republicans, by age, ideology, and education, show levels of trust below 20%.
