Renters below the 40th percentile of renter income spend more on rent than CPI accounts for. Renters above that income level spend less on rent.
Horizontal axis is total wages of all household members, expressed as a percentile among renter households. "50% wage" is the 50th percentile, which is the median renter household wage—$62,000 in 2023. The 10th percentile household wage is $20,000 and the 25th percentile is $36,000.
