In Pinellas County, the number of traffic deaths rose significantly from 2020 to 2021, from 108 to 160, which is a 48.15% increase in the number of deaths from all crashes in a single year, according to the site.
Two other counties in the Tampa Bay area also saw an increase in traffic deaths, behind Pinellas and Hillsborough. In Manatee County 12.3% more people died on a road from 2020 to 2021 — 65 people in 2020 and 73 people in 2021. In Polk County, 134 people died in 2020 and 166 people died in 2021, resulting in a 23% increase in fatalities.
However, in three other Tampa Bay counties, traffic deaths dropped last year. Pasco and Citrus counties saw slight decreases in deaths from 2020 to 2021. In Pasco County, fatalities decreased from 108 in 2020 to 106 in 2021. In Citrus County, 36 people died in 2021 and 39 people died in 2020. Hernando had the greatest decrease, with 33 people dying last year, down from the 44 who died in 2020.
