Illinois is one of few states with a 'Death Tax'

On top of a federal inheritance tax of up to 40%, 12 states and the District of Columbia impose their own 'death taxes.' Illinois is among them, and there is a proposal to increase rates 5 percentage points, giving Illinois the top marginal rate at 21%.
