Drug overdose deaths

Overdose deaths decreased in 41 states in the 12 months ending May 2024, driving deaths down 12.7% nationwide.

Notes: Due to delays in completing drug overdose-related death certificates, declines in drug overdose death estimates should be interpreted with caution in Georgia, Oklahoma, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey. Estimates compare the 12 months ending May 2024 with the preceding 12 months.
