Federal money sent to crisis pregnancy centers

Since 2017, at least eight states have directed more than $150 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding to crisis pregnancy centers. The federal program is intended to help families with food, housing, child care and other immediate expenses.

* Michigan stopped funding for pregnancy centers when Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took office in 2019. Pennsylvania stopped when Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro took office in 2023. Texas and North Dakota have used more general fund dollars in recent years for the centers rather than TANF.
