U.S. Stock Ownership, Annual Trends
Do you, personally, or jointly with a spouse, have any money invested in the stock market right now -- either in an individual stock, a stock mutual fund, or in a self-directed 401(k) or IRA?
Line graph. Sixty-one percent of U.S. adults in 2023 say they own stock, the first time the annual average has been at 61% since 2008. Between 1998 and 2008, the average was 60% or higher in all but one year. The low point in stock ownership was 52% in 2013 and 2016.
