State incentives contribute to the data center boom

Twenty-one data centers, used by companies like Meta and Microsoft, received state backing between 2020 and 2023. Elk Grove Village, a village of 33,000 people, has seen $2.6 billion of capital investments from these projects. There are at least 200 other, mostly older data centers in Illinois, with the vast majority in Chicagoland.
