Percent Change in Population by County Type, 2021-22

The central counties of the nation's largest cities lost 0.03% of their population. All other types of counties gained population from 2021-22.

Major metro areas: More than 1 million residents. Medium metro areas: 250,000 to under 1 million. Small metro: 50,000 to under 250,000. Nonmetro: Counties that are not part of any metropolitan statistical area (used synonymously with "rural" in this article).
