Coding of the Keys, 1984 to 2020

Table shows the coding of the Keys for the ten elections from 1984 to 2020, for which the model provided forecasts ahead of the election. Keys are coded as either 1 (true) or 0 (false). When five or fewer keys are false, the incumbent party wins; when any six or more are false, the challenging party wins.The 2000 and 2016 elections are special cases due to the split in the electoral and popular vote. If the model goal is to predict who is going to be president (i.e., electoral college win), the model wrongly predicted the 2000 election, when Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote to George W. Bush.
