Approaches to carbon removal vary across the world

Carbon removal approaches can be categorised in different ways. Here, the source considers reforestation/afforestation, soil carbon and biochar as natural carbon removal approaches and DAC, BECCS and mineralisation as technological carbon removal approaches. Ocean-based carbon removal includes natural approaches (for example, coastal wetland restoration) and technological approaches (such as electrochemical approaches). When specific approaches are not mentioned, we consider ocean-based carbon removal to be technological CDR.
