Prevalence of Self-Harm in NC Prisons

The N.C. Department of Adult Correction manages a range of self-harm behaviors. When an incarcerated person is identified as at risk for or engages in self-directed violence, they are immediately placed under constant observation as part of the initial safety precautions. Correctional officers notify the facility duty officer and medical and behavioral health staff. A behavioral health clinician evaluates each identified person and completes a Self-Injury Risk Assessment.
