Share of school-age children enrolled in alternative instruction by school district, 2024-25 school year

West River — specifically the Black Hills region and northwestern South Dakota — has the highest alternative instruction population when considering the alternative enrollment percentage of the district's entire school-age population.

To determine the number of school-age children in a district, South Dakota Searchlight combined enrollment numbers in each school district for public, non-public and alternative instruction. Oldham-Ramona and Rutland have consolidated into one district.
