Figures are for borrowers who experienced these consequences of default. Sixteen percent of borrowers who defaulted said they experienced wage garnishment, 36 percent said they experienced tax refund offset, 61 percent said they experienced a drop in credit score, 46 percent said they experienced collection fees, and 36 percent said they were unable to obtain more financial aid for school. Too few defaulters reported experiencing social security payment offset (3 percent) and loss of or inability to obtain a professional license (6 percent) to include their responses. Numbers may not add to the totals due to rounding.
