The number of FOIA requests is increasing, outpacing the government's ability to fulfill them.

FOIA requests to federal agencies have surged to more than 17% in three years, up from nearly 791,000 during the 2020 fiscal year to roughly 929,000 in 2022. But the number of requests processed hasn't kept up with demand, causing a nearly 50,000 gap.
